Neighbourhood guide

Living in Ioco

Ioco is a historic former company townsite on the north shore of Burrard Inlet in Port Moody, built in the 1920s to house workers at the adjacent Imperial Oil refinery. A cluster of its heritage Craftsman houses survives as a designated conservation area.

Location & boundaries

It sits on the north-shore side of Port Moody along Ioco Road, between Moody Centre and the villages of Anmore and Belcarra, with Burrard Inlet to the south and forest to the north.

History

Imperial Oil, whose initials give the name IOCO, built a refinery here from the mid-1910s and constructed dozens of houses, a store, churches and a community hall in the early 1920s; the surviving townsite has been recognized as a heritage conservation area since 2002.

Lifestyle

Today it is a small, quiet, historic residential enclave next to large tracts of forest and inlet shoreline, popular with walkers exploring off-the-beaten-path trails.

Housing & property types

The historic core is made up of early-1920s Craftsman-style cottages and houses, while the wider Ioco lands remain largely undeveloped forest.

Parks & recreation

Bert Flinn Park's forest trails lie just inland, and the north-shore inlet shoreline toward Old Orchard Park and Belcarra is nearby.

Getting around

Ioco Road is the main connection down to Moody Centre and its SkyTrain and West Coast Express station.

Attractions & landmarks

The heritage Ioco townsite, including the 1922 Ioco general store and the community hall, is a recognized historic landmark.

Who it may suit

May suit buyers drawn to a small, historic community surrounded by forest and inlet shoreline.
