Neighbourhood guide

Living in Maillardville

Maillardville is a historic neighbourhood in southwest Coquitlam and the largest Francophone community in Western Canada, founded in 1909 by French-Canadian mill workers. It retains a distinct French-Canadian heritage and is one of the city's oldest areas.

Location & boundaries

It sits in southwest Coquitlam above the Fraser River, near the former Fraser Mills industrial site, with Central Coquitlam to the north and the Burquitlam and Braid areas to the west.

History

In 1909 and 1910, Fraser Mills recruited French-Canadian workers from Quebec and Ontario, and the community that formed was named for Father Edmond Maillard, the first parish priest of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes.

Lifestyle

Today it blends its French-Canadian roots, celebrated each year at the Festival du Bois, with a diverse, established residential population.

Housing & property types

The area mixes older character houses with newer townhomes and low-rise infill.

Parks & recreation

Heritage Square and nearby green spaces anchor the historic core.

Schools

Public schools are part of School District 43 (Coquitlam), and the area is a centre of Francophone education under the Conseil scolaire francophone.

Attractions & landmarks

Landmarks include Mackin House museum (the former Fraser Mills manager's residence), Place des Arts community arts centre, the Laval Square church, and the annual Festival du Bois, the largest francophone festival on the West Coast.

Community facilities

Mackin House museum and Place des Arts serve as cultural facilities for the community.

Who it may suit

May suit buyers drawn to a historic community with cultural character and older housing near the Fraser River.
