Neighbourhood guide

Living in Brighouse

Brighouse is Richmond's downtown core, a dense, transit-oriented district of residential towers, shopping malls and civic institutions clustered along the No. 3 Road corridor.

Location & boundaries

It occupies the centre of Lulu Island, focused on No. 3 Road roughly between Saba and Cook Roads around the Richmond–Brighouse Canada Line terminus and City Hall. West Cambie lies to the north, McLennan and Sunnymede to the east, and Broadmoor to the south.

History

The area is named after Samuel Brighouse, an English immigrant who acquired about 697 acres of Lulu Island farmland in 1864; the name took hold after a railway station opened in 1902. The City acquired the former Brighouse Park Racetrack lands in 1958, later developing them into Minoru Park.

Lifestyle

It is the most urban part of Richmond, with a walkable, densely populated mix of condo residents, shoppers and office workers.

Housing & property types

Housing is dominated by high-rise and mid-rise condominiums, with some townhouses and remaining pockets of older detached homes.

Shopping & dining

Richmond Centre mall anchors the No. 3 Road shopping corridor, complemented by many restaurants and nearby Asian-themed shopping centres.

Parks & recreation

Minoru Park, built on the former racetrack, offers sports fields, a running track, lakes and an aquatic centre.

Schools

Public schools are operated by the Richmond School District (SD38).

Getting around

Richmond–Brighouse is the southern terminus of the Canada Line SkyTrain, with Lansdowne station nearby and frequent bus service along No. 3 Road.

Attractions & landmarks

The Richmond Cultural Centre and the Minoru Park civic precinct are focal points.

Community facilities

Richmond City Hall, Richmond Hospital and the Richmond Cultural Centre — which houses the main library, art gallery, museum and archives — are all located here.

Who it may suit

It may suit people wanting car-light, transit-connected condo living close to shopping, healthcare and civic services.
