Neighbourhood guide

Living in Cultus Lake

Cultus Lake is a lakeside community and recreation destination south of Chilliwack, built around a warm-water lake within Cultus Lake Provincial Park. It has a seasonal resort feel alongside a smaller permanent population.

Location & boundaries

It lies in the Fraser Valley about 11 km south of the Chilliwack River, roughly 80 km east of Vancouver, and is the source of the Sweltzer River.

History

Cultus Lake Park was established in 1924, and by 1930 around 200 leased summer cottages lined the western shore; the lake became a provincial park in 1950. It is an important spirit-quest place for the Stó:lo, whose Ts'elxwéyeqw name for it is Swílhcha.

Lifestyle

The community swells with day-trippers and campers in summer, while permanent residents have gradually converted former cabins into year-round homes.

Housing & property types

The housing mix includes former summer cottages, many on leased park land, along with year-round detached homes.

Parks & recreation

Cultus Lake Provincial Park covers roughly 656 hectares on both sides of the lake, offering swimming, boating and camping.

Schools

Cultus Lake Community School, first opened in 1947 and rebuilt after a 1959 fire, serves local children.

Getting around

Access is by car via Vedder Road and the Columbia Valley Highway from Chilliwack; service is limited and mainly seasonal.

Attractions & landmarks

Seasonal draws include Cultus Lake Waterpark and Cultus Lake Adventure Park, plus the lake and Sweltzer River themselves.

Community facilities

The community is administered by the Cultus Lake Park Board, which dates to 1932.

Who it may suit

May suit those seeking recreation-oriented or seasonal lakeside property.
