Neighbourhood guide

Living in Vedder Crossing

Vedder Crossing is a historic community and commercial node at the point where the Chilliwack River becomes the Vedder River, on Chilliwack's south side. It mixes residential streets with local shops and serves as a gateway to river recreation.

Location & boundaries

It centres on the Vedder Bridge over the Vedder River, south of Sardis and Vedder, at the entrance to the Chilliwack River valley and the route toward Cultus Lake.

History

The river junction has long been used by the Stó:lo for salmon fishing; the area is named for settler Volkert Vedder, who arrived in the 1860s. It grew from a 1909 settlement with a 1927 logging camp and the 1942 Camp Chilliwack military base, and the Vedder Bridge has been rebuilt many times after floods.

Lifestyle

The community blends residential living with a small commercial hub and outdoor recreation.

Housing & property types

Housing includes detached homes and newer development, adjacent to the planned Garrison Crossing community.

Shopping & dining

Local shopping is anchored by the Vedder Crossing Plaza near the bridge.

Parks & recreation

The Vedder River Rotary Trail and dikes support walking and salmon fishing, and Canada Education Park nearby includes a sports complex with an ice arena.

Getting around

Vedder Road is the main corridor, served by Chilliwack Transit, with the Fraser Valley Express (Route 66) stopping nearby at Vedder.

Attractions & landmarks

The Vedder Bridge and Canada Education Park are local landmarks.

Who it may suit

May suit those wanting access to river recreation and a historic riverside setting.
