Hatzic is a historic community on the east side of Mission, set on benchland above Hatzic Lake. It is notable for the Xá:ytem archaeological site and a mix of residential, rural and lakeside living.

Location & boundaries

It lies east of Mission City, between the Fraser River and Hatzic Lake and Hatzic Valley, along the Lougheed Highway (Highway 7).

History

Hatzic was the main village of the Xat'súq (Hatzic) Nation of the Stó:lo; the Xá:ytem site, with a sacred transformer stone and habitation remains dating back thousands of years, was designated a National Historic Site in 1992. The area was also home to the former St. Mary's Indian Residential School.
