Neighbourhood guide

Living in Burnaby Heights

Known locally as The Heights, this is a walkable North Burnaby neighbourhood built around an independent shopping strip on Hastings Street. Its north-facing slope gives many streets views toward Burrard Inlet and the North Shore mountains.

Location & boundaries

It occupies North Burnaby bounded by Boundary Road to the west, roughly Gamma Avenue to the east and Hastings Street to the south, with the land dropping steeply toward Burrard Inlet on its northern edge.

History

Commercial life on Hastings Street dates to the 1908 arrival of the streetcar, which established the district's enduring main street.

Lifestyle

The Hastings strip is lined with independent cafés, bakeries, boutiques and delis, and the local merchants' association runs annual events such as Hats Off Day, giving the area a strong small-business, community feel.

Housing & property types

Away from the commercial spine it is an established residential area made up mostly of single- and two-family homes.

Shopping & dining

Hastings Street between Boundary and Gamma is the core, a stretch known for independent restaurants, bakeries and shops rather than chain retail.

Getting around

Hastings Street is the main transit and commuter route, with frequent bus service into Vancouver and quick access to the Ironworkers Memorial (Second Narrows) crossing to the North Shore.

Attractions & landmarks

The Heights commercial district and its calendar of street festivals are the neighbourhood's best-known draw.

Who it may suit

May suit those wanting a walkable high-street neighbourhood with independent shops.
