Aldergrove is a semi-rural community in the southeast corner of the Township of Langley that grew from a 19th-century farming crossroads into a mixed residential, agricultural and commercial town centre. It keeps a village feel, with a compact Fraser Highway commercial strip surrounded by farmland.
It sits at the southeast edge of the Township around the 264 Street and Highway 1 (Exit 73) area, close to the Abbotsford boundary, with the U.S. border a short distance to the south.
Settlement began in the late 1800s where the Yale Road met a trail south to the United States, first called Jackman's Corners after former Royal Engineer Philip Jackman. It was renamed Alder Grove for its red alder trees, with a post office opening in 1885, and a stop on the Great Northern Railway later spurred its growth into a commercial centre.
The area has a rural-suburban character, with farms and acreages mixed among residential streets. It has long been known for its agricultural produce and its second-hand and antique shops.
Housing is a mix of single-family homes and townhouses in the town centre, with rural acreages and hobby farms on the outskirts.
Shopping and dining cluster along the Fraser Highway commercial strip through the town centre.
Aldergrove Regional Park lies nearby, and the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre provides indoor recreation and aquatic facilities.
Schools are part of the Langley School District (SD35), and Aldergrove Community Secondary serves the area.
TransLink buses serve Aldergrove, and the BC Transit Fraser Valley Express (Route 66) stops here on its Chilliwack-Langley-Metro Vancouver run. Fraser Highway and the Highway 1 interchange at 264 Street provide the main road access.
The Greater Vancouver Zoo is located in Aldergrove, and Aldergrove Regional Park offers trails and open space.
Community facilities include the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre and a Fraser Valley Regional Library branch.
It may suit buyers wanting more space or a rural-suburban setting at the Township's edge, and commuters who rely on Highway 1.
