Hammond is a historic, blue-collar mill neighbourhood on the Fraser River in west Maple Ridge, with a designated heritage character area. It retains much of its early-1900s streetscape and worker housing.

Location & boundaries

It lies in west Maple Ridge on the north bank of the Fraser River, around Maple Crescent and the CP rail line, near the Pitt Meadows boundary and including Port Hammond.

History

Established as a township in 1883 with the arrival of the railway, Hammond grew after the Port Hammond Lumber Co. mill opened in 1910; by the 1920s Hammond Cedar was among the largest cedar producers in the British Empire, and small mill-worker cottages from that era remain.
