Whonnock is a rural, treed and hilly community in far-east Maple Ridge on the north side of the Fraser River, centred on Whonnock Lake. It offers acreages and a community lake.
Location & boundaries
It lies in eastern Maple Ridge along the Lougheed Highway, roughly 56 km east of Vancouver, toward the Mission boundary.
History
The name comes from the local First Nation and means 'place of the humpback salmon'; first settled by Robert Robertson in 1860, it grew with the railway from 1880 as settlers arrived from Britain and Norway, and a school has existed here since 1885.
