Neighbourhood guide

Living in UniverCity

UniverCity is a planned, sustainability-focused community on top of Burnaby Mountain beside Simon Fraser University, surrounded by protected conservation forest. It is designed as a compact, walkable town centre serving the campus.

Location & boundaries

It occupies the summit of Burnaby Mountain, adjacent to SFU's Burnaby campus and above the Westridge slope.

History

The community grew from Arthur Erickson and Geoff Massey's 1960s vision of a residential town anchoring SFU; the city approved an Official Community Plan in 1996 and development followed as UniverCity, with the first residents arriving in the following years.

Lifestyle

It is a compact, walkable university community of students, staff and families, with a farmers' market and community events, and residents can access SFU facilities through a community card.

Housing & property types

Housing is predominantly mid-rise condominiums and townhouses built to high energy-efficiency standards.

Shopping & dining

University High Street offers a full-service grocery store, coffee shops, restaurants, a pharmacy, a bank and other services around a central town square.

Parks & recreation

The surrounding Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area offers extensive hiking and biking trails and mountaintop viewpoints.

Schools

Simon Fraser University anchors the community, and University Highlands Elementary, part of the Burnaby School District, opened on the mountain in 2010.

Getting around

Frequent bus service, principally the 145, connects UniverCity and SFU down the mountain to Production Way-University Station on the Expo and Millennium lines.

Who it may suit

May suit students, faculty and buyers wanting a walkable community next to the university and forest trails.
