Neighbourhood guide

Living in Downtown

Downtown New Westminster is the city's historic commercial and civic heart, rising from the Fraser River waterfront along Columbia Street.

Location & boundaries

It runs along the north bank of the Fraser River by the SkyTrain stations, centred on Columbia Street between roughly Fourth and Eighth Streets. The Quayside waterfront is below it, with Queens Park to the north and Sapperton to the east.

History

As British Columbia's first capital, its Columbia Street corridor of early-20th-century storefronts grew with the arrival of the railway between 1887 and 1892; the waterfront, once lined with terminals and a public market, was redeveloped from the 1980s.

Lifestyle

It is a walkable, mixed-use area combining heritage commercial blocks, condominium towers and riverfront leisure.

Housing & property types

Housing is mainly high-rise and mid-rise condominiums and rental apartments.

Shopping & dining

Historic Columbia Street and the River Market at Westminster Quay offer shops, restaurants and a public market.

Parks & recreation

Westminster Pier Park provides a riverfront boardwalk, lawns and play areas along the Fraser.

Schools

The New Westminster School District (SD40) serves the area.

Getting around

New Westminster and Columbia stations on the SkyTrain Expo Line serve downtown, with many connecting bus routes.

Attractions & landmarks

The Fraser River Discovery Centre, the Samson V Maritime Museum and River Market are riverfront attractions.

Who it may suit

It may suit people wanting transit-oriented, walkable condo living by the river.
