Queensborough is a distinct New Westminster neighbourhood on the eastern tip of Lulu Island, separated from the rest of the city by the Fraser River.

Location & boundaries

It occupies the eastern end of Lulu Island, bordered by Richmond to the west and reached from the New Westminster mainland via the Queensborough Bridge, with the Fraser River surrounding its other sides.

History

Surveyed by the Royal Engineers in the 1860s as a military reserve, the area was annexed by New Westminster in 1889 and subdivided from 1890; the Queensborough name was formalized with a post office in 1911. Immigrants drawn to sawmills, canneries and shipyards built a culturally diverse community.
