Living in Sapperton

Sapperton is one of the Lower Mainland's oldest neighbourhoods, on the Fraser River slope in east New Westminster around Columbia Street and the Royal Columbian Hospital.

Location & boundaries

It lies on the slope above the Fraser River, focused on East Columbia Street and Brunette Avenue, bounded roughly by the Brunette River to the east, the Fraser to the south and McBride Boulevard to the west. Queens Park lies to the west and the Heights above to the north.

History

It was founded in the 1860s as the base for the Royal Engineers, Columbia Detachment — the 'sappers' — who served as the colony's public works corps; the neighbourhood later grew around industry including the Labatt brewery.

Lifestyle

It mixes a historic high-street feel on East Columbia with newer transit-oriented development.

Housing & property types

Housing ranges from older detached and character homes to new condominiums, notably in the Brewery District.

Shopping & dining

East Columbia Street offers independent shops and restaurants, and the Brewery District adds newer retail and services.

Parks & recreation

Hume Park and Sapperton Park, along with the Fraser riverfront, provide local recreation.

Schools

The New Westminster School District (SD40) serves the area.

Getting around

Sapperton station on the SkyTrain (Expo and Millennium lines) is next to Royal Columbian Hospital, with Braid station nearby.

Attractions & landmarks

The Brewery District and the historic East Columbia commercial strip are focal points.

Community facilities

Royal Columbian Hospital, a major regional hospital founded in 1862, is located here.

Who it may suit

It may suit buyers wanting historic character or new transit-oriented condos next to a major hospital.
