Originally known as Sandy Flats or West Abbotsford within the District of Matsqui, it was settled from about 1930 by Mennonite immigrants who cleared land for berry, dairy and poultry farms; its commercial area grew after the Second World War at Clearbrook Road and South Fraser Way.
