Neighbourhood guide

Living in Chinatown

Vancouver's Chinatown is a nationally significant historic district on the eastern edge of downtown, and one of the largest and oldest Chinatowns in North America. Heritage storefronts, association buildings, herbalists and restaurants line Pender and Keefer Streets around the landmark Millennium Gate.

Location & boundaries

It centres on Pender Street between roughly Taylor Street and Gore Avenue, immediately east of the downtown core and adjoining Gastown to the north.

History

Chinese immigrants drawn by the gold rush and Canadian Pacific Railway work settled here from the late 1800s, with early commerce concentrated in Shanghai and Canton Alleys between about 1890 and 1920. The district received heritage protection in 1971 and is a National Historic Site, and it has been recognized as Canada's largest Chinatown since 1911.

Getting around

Stadium–Chinatown station on the Expo Line sits at the district's western edge, and it is within walking distance of downtown and Gastown.

Attractions & landmarks

Landmarks include the terracotta-tiled Millennium Gate on Pender Street and the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, opened in 1986 as the first full-size classical Chinese garden built outside China.

Who it may suit

It may suit those who value heritage architecture, cultural institutions and a central, transit-connected location on the edge of downtown.
