Neighbourhood guide

Living in False Creek

False Creek is the inlet and the surrounding residential and recreational district at the centre of Vancouver, best known on its southeast shore for the sustainable Olympic Village community and a continuous seawall. Mid-rise condos, parks and a waterfront path link it to Granville Island.

Location & boundaries

It centres on the southeast and south shores of False Creek, within the broader Fairview area, running from the head of the creek west toward Granville Island; downtown and Yaletown face it across the water.

History

The shoreline was an industrial zone of sawmills, rail yards and canneries into the 20th century before being redeveloped for housing and recreation. The Southeast False Creek Olympic Village was built to house athletes for the 2010 Winter Olympics and converted to housing afterward, and it was North America's first LEED Platinum neighbourhood.

Housing & property types

Housing is mostly mid-rise condominiums and townhouses, including the roughly 1,100-unit Olympic Village, alongside the older co-op and mixed-income community of False Creek South.

Shopping & dining

Granville Island, at the west end, is home to the Public Market plus artisan studios, galleries and eateries.

Parks & recreation

A seawall for walking and cycling wraps the shore and connects to Granville Island, with Hinge Park and Habitat Island in the Olympic Village area.

Getting around

The Canada Line's Olympic Village station, at Cambie Street and West 2nd Avenue, serves the district, and False Creek ferries cross to downtown and Granville Island.

Community facilities

The Creekside Community Recreation Centre in the Olympic Village offers a fitness centre, gymnasium and dance and yoga studios, plus a paddling and dragon-boat launch on the water.

Who it may suit

It may suit buyers wanting waterfront, walkable condo living with seawall recreation and quick access to downtown.
