Neighbourhood guide

Living in Grandview-Woodland

Grandview-Woodland is a diverse East Vancouver neighbourhood built around the Commercial Drive shopping street, mixing early-1900s character homes, a strong independent commercial culture and Trout Lake's green space. It ranges from an industrial waterfront in the north to residential streets around the lake in the south.

Location & boundaries

It stretches from near the Burrard Inlet waterfront south to Trout Lake and the Victoria Diversion, with Commercial Drive running through its centre; Hastings-Sunrise lies to the east and Chinatown and Strathcona to the west.

History

The area developed as a streetcar suburb in the early 20th century and became the centre of Vancouver's Italian community after the Second World War, with 'Little Italy' along Commercial Drive. Successive waves of immigration have kept it highly diverse.

Shopping & dining

Commercial Drive is the main commercial spine, known for cafés, delis, produce markets and independent restaurants and shops.

Parks & recreation

John Hendry Park (Trout Lake) anchors the south end with a lake, beach, walking trails and the Trout Lake Community Centre, which has a gym and ice rink.

Schools

Public schools are within the Vancouver School Board (SD39); the Britannia complex combines a secondary school with community facilities.

Getting around

Commercial–Broadway station, the network's only Expo–Millennium Line interchange and one of its busiest, is at the south edge, with frequent bus service including the 99 B-Line.

Community facilities

The Britannia Community Services Centre includes a public library, pool, rink and community centre, and the Trout Lake Community Centre serves the south end.

Who it may suit

It may suit those wanting a diverse, walkable, transit-rich East Vancouver neighbourhood with strong street life and park access.
