Neighbourhood guide

Living in Dunbar

Dunbar (formally Dunbar-Southlands) is a leafy, primarily single-family residential neighbourhood on Vancouver's west side, known for character houses, a low-key shopping street and proximity to Pacific Spirit Regional Park and UBC.

Location & boundaries

It occupies the far west side, bordered by Pacific Spirit Regional Park and the UBC Endowment Lands to the west, the Southlands district and the Fraser River to the south, and Kerrisdale to the east.

History

The area was logged and then settled in the early 20th century, largely by Scottish and British immigrants, with home-building following the arrival of the streetcar in the 1920s. The Southlands section along the river has archaeological evidence of much earlier Indigenous presence.

Housing & property types

It is dominated by detached single-family homes, many in English Arts and Crafts and Edwardian styles; the Southlands section adds larger estates and equestrian and riverfront properties.

Parks & recreation

The 750-hectare Pacific Spirit Regional Park borders the neighbourhood, with forest trails reachable from the west ends of King Edward Avenue and West 33rd, 37th and 39th Avenues.

Schools

Public schools fall under the Vancouver School Board (SD39) and include Lord Kitchener and Queen Elizabeth Elementary and Lord Byng Secondary; the highly regarded independent St. George's School is also here.

Getting around

There is no SkyTrain; the neighbourhood is served by bus routes along Dunbar Street and West 41st Avenue, with UBC to the west a major destination.

Who it may suit

It may suit families wanting detached homes near well-regarded schools and parkland, at the quieter western edge of the city.
