Neighbourhood guide

Living in Coal Harbour

Coal Harbour is a waterfront residential district on the north edge of downtown Vancouver, defined by glass high-rise condominium towers, marinas and a busy seawall. Despite its downtown location it is relatively quiet, oriented toward the water and Stanley Park.

Location & boundaries

It lines the harbour between the Vancouver Convention Centre and Stanley Park, north of the downtown core and west of Gastown.

History

Named in 1859 for low-grade coal found in the inlet, it began as an industrial zone of shipyards, sawmills and rail. From the 1990s onward, redevelopment transformed the former industrial waterfront into a high-rise residential and marina district.

Housing & property types

The area is dominated by modern high-rise condominium and apartment towers, many with waterfront townhomes at their base and marina frontage.

Parks & recreation

The roughly 2-km Coal Harbour Seawall runs along the water from the Convention Centre to Stanley Park, tying into the wider seawall network.

Getting around

Burrard and Waterfront SkyTrain stations sit just to the south; Waterfront is the downtown terminus of the Expo Line, Canada Line, SeaBus and West Coast Express.

Attractions & landmarks

It adjoins Stanley Park and the Vancouver Convention Centre, with marinas and floatplane traffic on the harbour.

Who it may suit

It may suit downsizers and buyers seeking walkable waterfront condo living with seawall access near Stanley Park.
