Living in Hastings-Sunrise

Hastings-Sunrise is a diverse, family-oriented working-class neighbourhood in the northeast corner of Vancouver, known for large lots, big parks, and the Pacific National Exhibition and Hastings Racecourse grounds. East Hastings Street's independent shops and restaurants form its commercial spine.

Location & boundaries

It occupies the city's northeast, bounded roughly by Burrard Inlet to the north and Boundary Road to the east, with Grandview-Woodland and Commercial Drive to the west and southwest.

History

The New Brighton and Hastings Townsite area on the inlet was Vancouver's first non-Indigenous settlement and only joined the city in 1910. Hastings Racecourse opened in 1892 and the Pacific National Exhibition (first held in 1910) made the area a fairground and entertainment district; the northern Hastings blocks developed residentially in the 1920s and the Sunrise area to the south in the 1940s.

Housing & property types

The area is largely detached houses, many on relatively large lots, giving it a lower-density, residential feel.

Shopping & dining

East Hastings Street is the main commercial strip, noted for a wide range of ethnic restaurants and independent shops.

Parks & recreation

New Brighton Park on the waterfront, Hastings Park with Empire Fields and the Sanctuary pond, and the surrounding grounds provide large green and recreation spaces.

Getting around

There is no SkyTrain within the neighbourhood; East Hastings Street is served by frequent bus routes, including the R5 Hastings RapidBus toward downtown.

Attractions & landmarks

The Pacific National Exhibition, the Playland amusement park and Hastings Racecourse at Hastings Park are the signature attractions.

Who it may suit

It may suit families wanting detached homes on larger lots near big parks, with an easygoing, diverse community feel.
