Neighbourhood guide

Living in Gastown

Gastown is Vancouver's oldest neighbourhood, a compact historic district of restored Victorian and Edwardian brick warehouses on downtown's northeast edge. Cobbled Water Street, boutiques, restaurants and the tourist-famous steam clock define it.

Location & boundaries

It is a roughly six-block district bounded by Cordova Street to the north, Hastings Street to the south, Cambie Street to the west and Columbia Street to the east, adjoining downtown, Chinatown and the waterfront.

History

The settlement grew from an 1867 saloon opened by John 'Gassy Jack' Deighton and became a trade centre before the Great Fire of 1886. It was rebuilt in brick and stone, and most Water Street buildings date from 1888 to 1912; a heritage revitalization added the steam clock in 1977.

Shopping & dining

Water Street is the main spine, lined with design shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants and bars, meeting at Maple Tree Square.

Getting around

Waterfront station, on the district's north side, links the Expo Line, Canada Line, SeaBus and West Coast Express, and Stadium–Chinatown station is a short walk south.

Attractions & landmarks

The Gastown steam clock and Maple Tree Square, where Water, Carrall and Alexander Streets meet, are the best-known landmarks.

Who it may suit

It may suit those wanting a historic, walkable downtown-edge district with heritage lofts and strong dining and nightlife.
