Neighbourhood guide

Living in Renfrew-Collingwood

Renfrew-Collingwood is a large, diverse, working-class residential neighbourhood in east Vancouver, straddling the Expo Line SkyTrain and Kingsway. It is one of the city's most multicultural areas.

Location & boundaries

On the city's east side, it runs roughly from the Grandview Highway and Broadway area south across Kingsway toward East 41st Avenue, bounded on the east by Boundary Road at the Burnaby line. Killarney lies to the south.

History

Originally forest and farmland, it developed from 1891 around Vanness Avenue and Joyce Street, site of the Collingwood tram stop on the interurban railway between Vancouver and New Westminster. Westminster Road was paved and renamed Kingsway in 1913, and SkyTrain later took over the old interurban right-of-way.

Lifestyle

It is one of the city's most culturally diverse areas, home to large immigrant communities including a substantial Filipino population.

Housing & property types

Housing mixes older single-family homes and duplexes with increasing higher-density buildings and towers around Joyce–Collingwood Station under the Norquay Village plan.

Shopping & dining

Kingsway and Joyce Street are the main commercial corridors, with everyday shops and a wide range of international restaurants.

Parks & recreation

Renfrew Ravine Park preserves one of the city's last open ravines, and Renfrew Park Community Centre provides recreation facilities.

Schools

The Vancouver School Board serves the neighbourhood.

Getting around

SkyTrain serves the area with 29th Avenue and Joyce–Collingwood stations on the Expo Line, and Renfrew and Rupert stations on the Millennium Line to the north; Kingsway, Grandview Highway and the Trans-Canada Highway are the main road routes.

Who it may suit

May suit buyers wanting strong transit access and relative value on the east side, and families drawn to a diverse community.
