Neighbourhood guide

Living in West Point Grey

West Point Grey is a quiet, affluent residential neighbourhood at Vancouver's northwest tip, next to the University of British Columbia, known for its beaches, character homes and the low-key West 10th Avenue village.

Location & boundaries

On the west side, it is bordered by West 16th Avenue to the south, Alma Street to the east, English Bay and the waterfront to the north and Blanca Street to the west, adjacent to UBC and the Endowment Lands. Kitsilano lies to the east.

History

The Musqueam lived here at the village of Ee'yullmough. The area was part of the municipality of Point Grey, which incorporated in 1908 and amalgamated with Vancouver in 1929; a streetcar line and the growth of nearby UBC spurred the Point Grey Village shopping strip on West 10th Avenue.

Lifestyle

It is a tranquil, family-oriented area, with students and university staff among its residents given the proximity to UBC.

Housing & property types

Housing is largely detached single-family homes, many of character, with some low-rise apartments near the commercial strip.

Shopping & dining

The main shopping area runs along West 10th Avenue between roughly Tolmie and Discovery streets, with local shops, cafés and restaurants.

Parks & recreation

Jericho, Locarno and Spanish Banks beaches stretch along the northern waterfront, and Jericho Beach Park and the nearby Pacific Spirit Regional Park offer trails and green space.

Schools

The Vancouver School Board serves the area with schools such as Queen Mary Elementary and Lord Byng Secondary, and the University of British Columbia lies immediately to the west.

Getting around

There is no SkyTrain; the area is served by frequent buses along West 4th Avenue, West 10th Avenue and Broadway toward UBC and downtown.

Attractions & landmarks

Jericho Beach, Spanish Banks and the Jericho Sailing Centre are notable waterfront destinations, with Pacific Spirit Regional Park nearby.

Community facilities

The West Point Grey Community Centre serves the neighbourhood.

Who it may suit

May suit families wanting detached homes near beaches, parks and UBC.
