Neighbourhood guide

Living in Yaletown

Yaletown is a fashionable, high-density downtown neighbourhood on the north shore of False Creek, where converted brick warehouses and modern glass condominium towers sit beside a marina and the waterfront seawall.

Location & boundaries

On the southern edge of downtown along False Creek, it is bounded roughly by Homer, Nelson and Drake streets and Pacific Boulevard, with the West End to the northwest and Olympic Village across the water to the south.

History

Yaletown began in 1887 as the Canadian Pacific Railway's western terminus, named for railway workers relocated from the town of Yale up the Fraser River. From about 1900 the city built an eight-block warehouse district here, largely finished by 1913; the warehouses were later converted to loft housing, and after Expo 86 the area transformed into a trendy residential and dining district.

Lifestyle

It is an upscale, walkable neighbourhood popular with young professionals, with a busy patio, restaurant and nightlife scene.

Housing & property types

Housing is mainly condominium apartments, from heritage warehouse loft conversions to newer high-rise towers.

Shopping & dining

Mainland and Hamilton streets, in the heritage warehouse core, hold restaurants, patios, boutiques and design shops, and the area is known for its dining and nightlife.

Parks & recreation

The False Creek seawall runs along the waterfront past a marina, and David Lam Park and George Wainborn Park provide green space by the water.

Getting around

The Canada Line serves the area at Yaletown–Roundhouse Station, False Creek passenger ferries dock at the marina, and buses run along Davie Street and Pacific Boulevard.

Attractions & landmarks

The Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre, home to the restored CPR steam locomotive Engine 374, is a landmark, and David Lam Park hosts festivals.

Community facilities

The Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre, housed in the neighbourhood's restored rail roundhouse, is the main community facility.

Who it may suit

May suit professionals and downsizers wanting a walkable, waterfront condominium lifestyle downtown.
