Neighbourhood guide

Living in Kerrisdale

Kerrisdale is an established, affluent Westside neighbourhood centred on the West 41st Avenue shopping district, known for heritage homes, tree-lined streets and a village-style main street. It has a long-settled, family-oriented character.

Location & boundaries

It sits on the west side around West 41st Avenue and West Boulevard, east of Dunbar-Southlands and west of the Oakridge and Marpole areas, sloping toward the Fraser River to the south.

History

The name dates to 1905, when a BC Electric Railway interurban stop on West 41st was named 'Kerry's Dale' after a resident's Scottish family home. Streetcar service reached 41st Avenue in 1912, and Kerrisdale grew into an affluent suburb of grand homes before joining Vancouver with Point Grey in 1929.

Housing & property types

Housing ranges from grand heritage houses in styles like Arts and Crafts, Tudor Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival to newer detached homes, with low- and mid-rise rental and condo apartments concentrated in the northern part near the shopping district.

Shopping & dining

West 41st Avenue around West Boulevard is the main shopping street, a long-established Westside hub of shops, restaurants and services.

Schools

Public schools fall under the Vancouver School Board (SD39), including Kerrisdale Elementary, with Point Grey Secondary just north; the independent Crofton House School (a girls' school founded in 1898) is also in the area.

Getting around

There is no SkyTrain in the neighbourhood; it is served by buses along West 41st Avenue and West Boulevard, with the nearest Canada Line stations to the east.

Who it may suit

It may suit families wanting a quiet, established Westside neighbourhood with heritage homes, strong schools and a walkable shopping street.
