Neighbourhood guide

Living in Marpole

Marpole is a residential neighbourhood at Vancouver's southern edge along the Fraser River. Historically an industrial mill-and-cannery community, it is now a mix of older housing and newer transit-oriented development around Cambie Street.

Location & boundaries

It sits at the south end of the city's west side, bordered roughly by Park Drive and West 57th Avenue to the north, Granville Street to the west, Ontario Street to the east, and the Fraser River to the south. Oakridge lies to the north.

History

One of the region's oldest inhabited sites, Marpole was home to the Musqueam and the ancient Great Marpole Midden, uncovered during Granville Street's extension in 1889. First settled by newcomers in the 1860s as 'Eburne Station,' it was renamed Marpole in 1916 after CPR superintendent Richard Marpole and was absorbed into Vancouver in 1929.

Housing & property types

The housing stock combines older single-family homes and rental low-rises with newer condominium towers rising around Cambie Street and the Marine Drive hub.

Shopping & dining

Older commercial strips run along Granville Street and Marine Drive, and the Marine Gateway development at Cambie and SW Marine adds shops, restaurants and a cinema.

Schools

The Vancouver School Board serves Marpole with elementary schools such as David Lloyd George and Sir Wilfrid Laurier, and Sir Winston Churchill Secondary, which offers an International Baccalaureate program, on Heather Street.

Getting around

The Canada Line runs along the eastern side with Marine Drive Station at the Marine Gateway hub, and the Arthur Laing, Oak Street and Knight Street bridges connect the area to the airport and Richmond.

Attractions & landmarks

The Marpole Midden (cusnaʔum) is a designated National Historic Site marking one of the largest ancient village sites in the region.

Who it may suit

May suit commuters valuing quick airport and Richmond access and buyers looking at newer condos near rapid transit.
