Living in Bowness

Bowness is a former town in northwest Calgary along the Bow River, and one of the city's oldest communities, with a distinct main street and a broad socioeconomic mix.

Location & boundaries

It sits in northwest Calgary, bounded by the Bow River to the north and east, 16th Avenue (the Trans-Canada Highway) to the south and Stoney Trail to the west. Montgomery lies across the river to the east.

History

Beginning as a ranch in 1890-91, it was named after Bowness-on-Windermere in England's Lake District. It incorporated as a village in 1948, became a town in 1951 and was annexed by Calgary in 1964.

Lifestyle

It is a riverside community ranging from modest older housing to renovated and riverfront homes, with a walkable main street and strong access to river parks.

Housing & property types

Housing is a mix of older single-family houses, former military housing, newer infill homes, condominiums and rental apartments.

Shopping & dining

Bowness Road, the community's Main Street, has been revitalized with independent shops, restaurants and cafes, including reused heritage buildings.

Parks & recreation

Bowness Park, between the Bow River and a lagoon, offers picnicking, boating and winter ice skating and connects to the regional pathway network; Baker Park lies across the river.

Schools

Public schools include Bowness High School and several elementary and junior schools under the Calgary Board of Education, along with Our Lady of the Assumption (K-9) in the Calgary Catholic School District.

Getting around

Calgary Transit buses serve the community, and the Trans-Canada Highway (16th Avenue) and Stoney Trail provide regional road access.

Community facilities

A branch of the Calgary Public Library occupies a repurposed commercial building on Main Street.

Who it may suit

May suit buyers wanting an older riverside community with parkland and a small main street.
