Living in Altadore

Altadore is an inner-city residential community in southwest Calgary, closely tied to the Marda Loop shopping district. It mixes original post-war bungalows with a large amount of newer infill housing.

Location & boundaries

It sits in southwest Calgary, roughly bounded by 33rd Avenue SW and South Calgary to the north, 14th Street SW and River Park to the east, Crowchild Trail and Garrison Woods to the west, and around 50th Avenue SW to the south. It adjoins Richmond, Elbow Park and Britannia.

History

The community was established in 1945 and built out largely with post-war housing. The origin of its name is uncertain.

Lifestyle

It is a walkable inner-city area popular with families and professionals, anchored by the Marda Loop commercial strip and nearby river parkland.

Housing is a mix of detached houses, semi-detached and duplex units, row housing and low-rise apartments, with substantial infill redevelopment replacing older bungalows.

Marda Loop, along 33rd and 34th Avenues SW, is one of Calgary's larger outdoor shopping districts and operates as a business improvement area with shops, restaurants and cafes.

Parks & recreation

River Park, a large off-leash park along the Elbow River, borders the community to the east and connects to Sandy Beach Park and the river pathway network.

Schools

Schools include Altadore School (K-6) under the Calgary Board of Education, with Central Memorial High School as the designated high school. Private options such as Lycee Louis Pasteur and Rundle Academy are also in the area.

Getting around

Calgary Transit buses serve the community; major roads include Crowchild Trail SW and 14th Street SW, with 33rd and 34th Avenues running through Marda Loop. There is no CTrain station within the community.
