Living in Bridgeland

Bridgeland (Bridgeland-Riverside) is a walkable inner-city community northeast of downtown, historically home to immigrant communities and now known for redevelopment and a lively main street.

Location & boundaries

It sits just northeast of downtown Calgary along the Bow River, bounded by the river to the south, Deerfoot Trail to the east, Edmonton Trail to the west and Renfrew to the north.

History

Settled during Calgary's 1880s boom by Russian-German (initially called Germantown), Italian and Ukrainian immigrants, Riverside was annexed by Calgary in 1911. The former Calgary General Hospital site was redeveloped as The Bridges after the hospital's 1998 demolition.

Lifestyle

It is a dense, walkable community mixing longtime residents and newcomers, with an active cafe and restaurant scene.

Housing & property types

Housing is a mix of single-family houses and parkside condominiums, including newer multi-family buildings in The Bridges development.

Shopping & dining

1st Avenue NE is the main street, lined with restaurants, cafes, bakeries and shops.

Parks & recreation

The Bow River pathway and the Harvie Passage whitewater feature are at the community's edge, and the Calgary Zoo sits on adjacent St. George's Island.

Schools

Schools include Riverside School under the Calgary Board of Education and St. Angela School in the Calgary Catholic School District, along with specialized programs.

Getting around

The Bridgeland/Memorial CTrain station on the Blue Line serves the community, with the Zoo station adjacent; pedestrian bridges connect to St. Patrick's Island and East Village.

Attractions & landmarks

The Calgary Zoo, the Telus Spark science centre and the pedestrian George C. King Bridge are nearby.

Who it may suit

May suit people wanting a walkable inner-city neighbourhood near downtown, the river and the zoo.
