Living in Eau Claire

Eau Claire is a downtown riverfront district on the Bow River next to Prince's Island Park, built largely on former industrial land.

Location & boundaries

It sits at the northern edge of downtown Calgary, between the Bow River and the downtown core, north of around 4th Avenue SW.

History

It is named for the Eau Claire Lumber Company, whose Wisconsin-linked sawmill operated on the riverbank from the 1880s; the land was later redeveloped for residential and commercial use.

Lifestyle

It is a walkable riverside area of condominium residents, office workers and park visitors, with festivals held on nearby Prince's Island.

Housing & property types

Housing is almost entirely condominiums and apartments.

Shopping & dining

Restaurants, cafes and hotels front the area, and the former Eau Claire Market (demolished in 2024) is being redeveloped.

Parks & recreation

Prince's Island Park, a large river-island park, hosts the Calgary Folk Music Festival and other events, and the Bow River pathway runs through the district.

Getting around

The area is highly walkable and adjacent to downtown transit, with the future Green Line CTrain planned to include an Eau Claire station.

Attractions & landmarks

The Peace Bridge, a distinctive red pedestrian bridge over the Bow River, and Prince's Island Park are landmarks.

Who it may suit

May suit people wanting a walkable riverfront home next to downtown and Prince's Island.
