Living in Beltline

The Beltline is a dense, urban district immediately south of downtown and one of Calgary's most populated, mixed-use neighbourhoods.

Location & boundaries

It sits in central Calgary south of the downtown core, running roughly between 9th Avenue and 17th Avenue S, from 14th Street SW east toward the Elbow River. It was formed from the older Connaught and Victoria Park areas.

History

The district was formally established in 2003 by amalgamating Connaught (dating from 1905) and Victoria Park (1914), and is named for an early-1900s streetcar belt line.

Lifestyle

It is a walkable, high-density area of apartment and condominium dwellers, with a concentration of restaurants, bars and offices, especially along 17th Avenue SW.

Housing & property types

Housing is overwhelmingly high- and mid-rise apartments and condominiums, including many recently built residential towers.

Shopping & dining

17th Avenue SW is a dense retail and entertainment strip of shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs, complemented by dining along 4th Street SW.

Central Memorial Park and Haultain Park provide green space, and the Stampede grounds lie along the district's eastern edge.

Public schools in the district include Connaught School under the Calgary Board of Education.

Getting around

The area is highly walkable and served by Calgary Transit, with the CTrain running along 7th Avenue on the downtown edge; 1st Street SW and Macleod Trail are key corridors.

Landmarks include Stampede Park and the Scotiabank Saddledome, the expanded BMO Centre, and the 17th Avenue SW entertainment district.
