Living in East Village

East Village is a redeveloped mixed-use district on the eastern edge of downtown, at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers, on the site of Calgary's original townsite.

Location & boundaries

It sits in eastern downtown Calgary within the Rivers District, at the Bow-Elbow confluence next to Fort Calgary, bordered by Victoria Park and the Beltline to the south and Bridgeland across the Bow River.

History

The area contains Calgary's original 1875 townsite; after decades of decline it has been redeveloped since about 2007 under the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation.

Lifestyle

It is a dense, walkable riverfront community of mostly new condominium residents, with cultural venues and river pathways at the doorstep.

Housing & property types

Housing is almost entirely condominiums and apartments, including many purpose-built rentals.

Shopping & dining

Ground-floor retail includes a downtown grocery and shops, and the historic Simmons Building houses restaurants and a cafe along the RiverWalk.

Parks & recreation

The Jack and Jean Leslie RiverWalk and St. Patrick's Island Park provide riverside green space and event areas.

Getting around

The CTrain runs through the adjacent downtown core, with City Hall station nearby, and the district is highly walkable with pedestrian bridges to Bridgeland and St. Patrick's Island.

Attractions & landmarks

Landmarks include Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre; the Calgary Central Library; Fort Calgary; and the Simmons Building.

Community facilities

The Calgary Central Library, opened in 2018, anchors the district.

Who it may suit

May suit people wanting a new-build, walkable riverfront condominium near downtown culture.
