Neighbourhood guide

Living in Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant is a lively inner-city neighbourhood centred on Main Street, known for its craft breweries, independent shops, heritage houses and a growing arts and tech presence. It is often described as Vancouver's first suburb.

Location & boundaries

It runs from the south shore of False Creek southeast up the slope, roughly along Main Street between East 2nd and East 33rd avenues, where Main, Kingsway and Broadway meet. Olympic Village lies to the northwest and Riley Park to the south.

History

Named in 1888 after the Irish birthplace of Jane Fortune Kemp, the area grew as a streetcar-era village along Brewery Creek, which followed roughly the path of today's Main Street. Streetcars arrived in 1890, and by the early 1900s several breweries operated along the creek.

Lifestyle

A mix of long-time residents, young professionals, creatives and small businesses gives the area a busy, walkable street life.

Housing & property types

Housing ranges from Edwardian and Victorian character homes to converted heritage buildings, low-rise apartments and newer condominiums.

Shopping & dining

Main Street is the spine, dense with independent boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops, and a well-known cluster of craft breweries including Brassneck, 33 Acres and Red Truck.

Getting around

The Millennium Line's Broadway extension adds Mount Pleasant Station at Main Street and Broadway, and the area is also served by frequent buses on Main, Broadway and Kingsway.

Community facilities

The Mount Pleasant Community Centre on Ontario Street offers recreation programs and civic amenities for residents.

Who it may suit

May suit those wanting a walkable, transit-connected neighbourhood with independent retail and nightlife.
