Neighbourhood guide

Living in Shaughnessy

Shaughnessy is one of Vancouver's most affluent and historic residential neighbourhoods, known for its large heritage mansions, curving tree-lined streets and estate-sized lots.

Location & boundaries

On the west side, it is bounded roughly by West 16th Avenue to the north, West 41st Avenue to the south, Oak Street to the east and East Boulevard to the west. South Granville lies to the north.

History

Developed by the Canadian Pacific Railway and named after CPR president Thomas Shaughnessy, the First Shaughnessy subdivision began in 1907 between West 16th and King Edward avenues, followed by Second Shaughnessy to the south in 1912. New homes had to meet high minimum building costs on oversized lots, and the district became home to the city's elite.

Lifestyle

The neighbourhood is quiet and low-density, with heritage protections shaping much of First Shaughnessy.

Housing & property types

Housing is dominated by large detached heritage houses and estates on generous lots, including landmark mansions such as Glen Brae and Hycroft.

Parks & recreation

VanDusen Botanical Garden, developed on land once used as a golf course, sits at Oak Street and West 37th Avenue on the neighbourhood's edge, complemented by smaller parks and tree-lined boulevards.

Schools

The Vancouver School Board serves the area, which also contains several private schools.

Getting around

Shaughnessy has no SkyTrain of its own; Canada Line stations at King Edward and Oakridge–41st Avenue lie a short distance to the east on Cambie Street, and buses run along Granville, Oak, Arbutus, 41st and King Edward.

Attractions & landmarks

VanDusen Botanical Garden and the heritage mansion Hycroft are notable landmarks.

Who it may suit

May suit buyers seeking large detached heritage homes on quiet streets close to central Vancouver.
