Living in Lake Bonavista

Lake Bonavista is an established southeast community and Canada's first neighbourhood built around a man-made lake.

Location & boundaries

It sits in southeast Calgary, bounded by Anderson Road to the north, Macleod Trail to the west and Canyon Meadows Drive to the south, with Fish Creek Provincial Park beyond to the south. It neighbours Willow Park, Canyon Meadows and Parkland.

History

Established in 1967, it was the first community in Canada built around an artificial lake and became a model for later Calgary lake communities.

Lifestyle

It is a mature, family-oriented suburb where residents have private lake access for swimming, boating and skating.

Housing is predominantly single-family detached homes, many from the 1960s and 1970s, with some newer infill.

Shopping & dining

The Lake Bonavista Promenade and the Avenida shopping centre provide retail, offices and restaurants.

Public schools include Lake Bonavista, Andrew Sibbald and Sam Livingston elementaries and Nickle School under the Calgary Board of Education, with St. Boniface and St. Bonaventure in the Calgary Catholic School District.

Getting around

The Anderson and Canyon Meadows CTrain stations on the Red Line are nearby along Macleod Trail, and Calgary Transit buses serve the community.

Community facilities

The community centre includes two ice rinks and a gymnasium.
