Living in Marda Loop

Marda Loop is a lively inner-city shopping and dining district in southwest Calgary, known for its walkable strip of independent shops, cafes, salons and pubs set among established residential streets. It has grown into one of the city's most popular outdoor retail villages.

Location & boundaries

The district is centred on 33rd and 34th Avenues SW between Crowchild Trail and 18th Street SW, plus Garrison Gate SW, and sits within the Altadore, South Calgary and Garrison Woods communities of the inner southwest.

History

The name combines 'Marda,' from the Marda Theatre (1953-1988, named for owners Mark and Mada Jenkins), with 'Loop,' recalling the streetcar turnaround that ran out to 34th Avenue and 20th Street from 1909 before looping back downtown. The former Currie Barracks lands nearby were redeveloped as Garrison Woods in the 2000s.

Lifestyle

It is a pedestrian-oriented district that draws shoppers, diners and nearby residents, and it hosts long-running community events including the Marda Gras street festival each August.

Housing & property types

The surrounding streets mix older single-family homes with a growing number of newer higher-density condominiums and mixed-use buildings such as the Treo development.

Shopping & dining

The core along 33rd and 34th Avenue SW is lined with small-scale independent retailers, coffee shops, restaurants, beauty salons and pubs.

Who it may suit

It may suit those wanting a walkable inner-city district with independent shops and dining close to downtown.
