Living in Mission

Mission is a dense, walkable inner-city neighbourhood in southwest Calgary with a historic Catholic-mission origin. It is best known for its restaurant-and-shop strip along 4th Street SW and its proximity to downtown and the Elbow River.

Location & boundaries

It sits in the inner southwest along the Elbow River, between the Beltline to the north and Mount Royal and Roxboro to the south, with Cliff Bungalow to the west.

History

The area began as a Roman Catholic mission in 1875 and was incorporated as the francophone village of Rouleauville in 1899 before being annexed by Calgary in 1907, after which the French street names were replaced by Calgary's numbering system.

It is a busy, pedestrian-friendly urban community close to downtown, popular for its cafes, patios and river pathways.
