Living in McKenzie Lake

McKenzie Lake is an established lake community in southeast Calgary built around a private man-made lake with a central island. It is largely a single-family suburb where the lake and pathways anchor daily life.

Location & boundaries

It sits in southeast Calgary, bordered roughly by Deerfoot Trail to the east, Stoney Trail to the south, Fish Creek Provincial Park to the west and 130th Avenue SE to the north, adjacent to McKenzie Towne and New Brighton.

History

The community was first developed in 1984 and expanded through the mid-1990s after the annexation of Midnapore, with an artificial lake created in response to the popularity of earlier lake communities such as Lake Bonavista.

Lifestyle

It is a quiet, family-oriented suburb centred on lake access, green space and the adjacent Fish Creek park.

Housing & property types

Housing is predominantly single-family detached homes, including larger executive properties along the ridges and lakefront, with relatively little rental stock.

Parks & recreation

The private lake supports resident swimming and boating, the community association operates amenities including an ice rink and tennis and basketball courts, and Fish Creek Provincial Park borders the community to the west.

Schools

Schools include McKenzie Lake School and Mountain Park School under the Calgary Board of Education, plus Cardinal Newman School under the Calgary Catholic School District.

Getting around

Major road access is via Deerfoot Trail and Stoney Trail, with Calgary Transit bus routes serving the community.
